110 36 zuidvleugel

110 36 zuidvleugel is a portrait/documentation/analysis of the South Wing landscape as a function of time, taking the point of view of a traveller riding a fictional multimodal transportation system which teleports between parallell trajectories while moving southwards. By treating video footage as a cube of pixels, an extremely wide moving image is extracted which visualizes what was seen across horizontal space, time moving to the right. The resulting image is a liquid panorama masquerading as monumental landscape art, its true nature being a structural analysis of cities and countryside experienced by its inhabitants during everyday travels.

110 36 zuidvleugel is part of my ongoing research into the relationship between landscape and personal time, that is, time passing while moving through the landscape. One experiences landscape differently by moving through it at different speeds, but one also experiences time as a function of the passing landscape. Landscape influences the people passing through it on a daily basis, but the people also continually change the landscape. Such relationships and symbioses form the conceptual basis for this project. Landscape as a function of time is visualized with timecube and slitscanning techniques, using public transportation as the main operative slitscanning device.

The installation was selected through competition for Panorama Zuidvleugel, a commission for a public work. 8 artists were invited by Atelier Zuidvleugel and Province of South Holland to submit proposals, 3 projects were selected. I proposed to make a time/space analysis of selected commuter routes and present this as a multi-channel video installation.

Behavioral patterns of inhabitants along with expansion of city borders slowly transform the Zuidvleugel into one big city. This creates a multitude of infrastructural, cultural and political issues. Panorama Zuidvleugel is part of the thinktank activity about the region and its future. Here, artists are components of a process which shapes the future landscape as well as the landscape/human symbiosis.

The full proposal, commission letter and related info can be accessed in the texts section. Atelier Zuidvleugel has lots of info in Dutch on their website about the commission and other artists, there is also a short video presenting me and my proposal.
