5x2xde/accel, märstalinjen

A high definition digital movie shows a timecube analysis of 5 commuter stations along the Märsta line outside Stockholm: Sollentuna, Häggvik, Norrviken, Rotebro and Upplands Väsby. The documented trip mimics a regular commute, outwards in the morning and back in the afternoon. Each sequence is either a deceleration into a station, or an acceleration away from it.

The image is transformed with an analytical algorithm used in computer vision and robotics. Essentially the software remaps the time-axis of the original footage to the horizontal axis of the transformed output. This results in a very wide moving image showing an analysis of what was seen, time progressing sideways. The source footage was shot on a sunny day right at the intersection of Swedish winter and spring. There is no foliage yet which allows landscape features to dominate, an analysis of the landscape as seen by a traveler in motion.

Finally, the work is 1920x1200 pixels, a custom high resolution format designed to fit exactly into the native resolution of a 23’ high quality LCD display. A crystal sharp image which allows you to zoom in by moving your face closer to the screen. The workstation style installation supports focused study of the image.

5x2xde/accel, Märstalinjen is a continuation of my location specific landscape documentation/analysis work.
